When I ponder my first memories of the Internet I can't help but think of America Online.
I can still hear the proverbial " You've Got Mail" in my mind. There was even a movie titled " You've Got Mail" with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Many peoples first experience going online was through America Online . They had a very user friendly Internet web browser and a effective marketing strategy. My parents actually still use there email service.
My main purpose for the Internet at the time was email communication with my lightning fast 56k modem.
I did eventually find my way to a popular P2P sharing site called Napster which sadly shut down. I was so excited when I burned my first C.D. from pirated Internet song. My mother scolded me when she found out and I eventually stopped pirating Internet content. My life would be much more difficult without the Internet. My first thought would be of all the classes I have taken over the years online. Those credits would be gone. I would have to look up information in a encyclopedia's when doing research projects. Searching for places to vacation would not be much fun either. The Internet has raised my standard of living, made me a more aware consumer, and made information much more accessible
