Internet Safety

Internet Security Video

When  " Googling" myself on the Internet I  can't help but get a knot in the pit of my stomach. My

worst nightmare flashes through my mind. My Wells Fargo bank account balance and  account

number pop up on the screen or the images from last weekend's amazing  party with an image

of me drinking from  a gigantic keg of beer. Private and personal things get posted about

people without their consent all the time on the web. This is just a sad fact of living in the digital

age.

In regards to the Google of myself, there were only two the pages that were actually "me".

These are highlighted in red. One is my Linked In account and the other is my Face book

account. These two accounts I feel very comfortable with anyone viewing.

The type of content that is on the web about you can really help or hinder your professional

career as well as your personal life  . It is not the quantity of the content that can help you or hurt

you but the quality. We as users of the internet need to watch the quality of our digital content.

When I say quality I mean specifically "good"  quality like and online resume or " bad" quality

like a image of you severely intoxicated at a fraternity party. The type of quality content can help

career prospects on the web or be  detrimental to them.

Internet Memories

When I ponder my first memories of the Internet I can't help but think of America Online.
I can still hear the proverbial " You've Got Mail" in my mind. There was even a movie titled " You've Got Mail" with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Many peoples first experience going online was through America Online . They had a very user friendly Internet web browser and a effective marketing strategy. My parents actually still use there email service.
My main purpose for the Internet at the time was email communication with my lightning fast 56k modem.
I did eventually find my way to a popular P2P sharing site called Napster which sadly  shut down. I was so excited when I burned my first C.D. from pirated Internet song. My mother scolded me when she found out and I eventually stopped pirating Internet content.
My life would be much more difficult without the Internet. My first thought would be of all the classes I have taken over the years online. Those credits would be gone. I would have to look up information in a encyclopedia's when doing research projects. Searching for places to vacation would not be much fun either. The Internet has raised my standard of living, made me a more aware consumer, and made information much more accessible

Personal Computing

Technology has always been exciting to me. It takes me way back to my first computer. The computer my parents bought me for my 8th grade graduation. I can still remember the excitement I felt opening up the boxes and setting up the computer for the very first time. I was overjoyed and in awe. This is where my love for technology and computing began.

At the time, the computer was the top of the line. It had a 33 mhz processor and a 40 megabyte hard disk drive. It used a Disk-Operating System fondly referred to as D.O.S. The system did have a graphical user interface of Windows 3.1 but had minimal commands options through it.

My Packard Bell 286 by today's standards  would be more suited for a boat anchor but this computer will always have a fond place in my heart. This feeling is similar to a teen's first car or some one first love. I will always remember my Packard Bell 286 and the joy and wonder it brought to my life.

The Digital Native Debate

The Digital Native debate has been publicized and a topic of interest in education circles globally for the past decade. The main topic of debate is that digital native brains are different than digital immigrants. Another underlying issue behind this debate is  what are some ways of improving our youth's educational system for those whose who are considered digital native? How do we make our lesson plans more digitally involved?  Our educational system, as a whole, needs to evolve digitally as humans ourselves evolve and change.

Upon reflection of this topic I do believe in digital native. I see young children, even  toddlers,
with i Touches, iPad, and iPhone's. These children are playing games, watching video's and constantly have digital interaction. This daily digital upbringing changes our the brains thought process. The knowledge of the internet at ones fingure tips changes how to retrieve and retain information. The blog below shares incite on my view's on digital natives and immigrants.
